My Skills

Leadership

With a natural inclination for leadership as a child, I was elected as the captain of my high school soccer team, this experience ignited my motivation to guide and inspire others throughout my college years. However, this transcribed to my time during my time in college as I dedicated myself to various volunteer activities and mentoring roles. One of the most significant positions I held was as the Medical Chairman for Global Brigades, a nonprofit organization committed to providing free healthcare to underserved communities worldwide. As the Medical Chair, I not only led our successful fundraising initiatives but also took on the responsibility of teaching and mentoring my peers in vital medical skills, such as measuring blood pressure, assessing respirations, and establishing a makeshift pharmacy and inpatient clinic within Panamanian school facilities. However, this was just one position in my multifaceted leadership journey.

With an initiative to establish the EMPOWER Registered Student Organization (RSO), I was subsequently elected as the President. This endeavor involved constructing the organization’s constitution, officially registering it as a student organization, and orchestrating events designed to supplement the University of Arkansas’s EMPOWER Program. The EMPOWER Program is a commendable organization that provides a college experience for students with cognitive disabilities, encompassing academics, independent living, employment, and health skills with the goal of nurturing self-sufficient young adults. As the President, I pushed beyond my comfort zone, confidently delivering speeches in front of audiences of up to 150 individuals, leading events, and mentorship to the EMPOWER students, thereby exemplifying my commitment to leadership and advocacy for meaningful causes.

Career and Self-Motivation

Maintaining a steadfast commitment to continuous self-development, I strategically shaped my resume to align with my aspirations of becoming a physician. Achieving and maintaining a 3.8 GPA and scoring above average on the MCAT were not just academic feats but testaments to my motivation to succeed. The journey to conquer the MCAT was a testament to my determination; initially challenging, I encountered the test’s adversity. However, through time, motivation, and application of my critical thinking skills, I triumphed over many obstacles to bring me closer to my dream of becoming a physician.

In addition to my academic career, I ventured into the field of research as a research assistant in Dr. Leong’s Fullstack Psychoneurological lab. Here, I engaged in the intricate work of framing and presenting fMRI data to unravel the correlation between genetic and environmental factors in neurological development. This experience not only immersed me in the research domain but also deepened my familiarity with neurological anatomy and radiographic scans, such as fMRI. Beyond research, my dedication to clinical exposure led me to assume the role of a Patient Care Technician at my local hospital. This role helped crystalize my pursuit of a career in medicine. My vision as a future physician extends beyond clinical expertise; and encompasses a commitment to patients and their families throughout their treatment journey. Reinforced my commitment during my job as a PCT, I highlighted my dedication to providing steadfast support regardless of my title, as I believe in being a physician who is not only motivated to be on the patient’s side but also committed to their well-being.
