Career Skills

On the Clock

Adaptability and persistence are all seen throughout teamwork. With only twenty seconds left on the clock and the score at 61-62, we were up, but the other team had possession. Since my defense was pretty solid, the game plan was for me to guard the person that was intended to shoot the game winning shot. Considering my height, the matchup was not ideal, but at the moment I had to adapt to the circumstances.

With time running out, I was holding my defense fairly well. Finally, the buzzer sounded, and we won the game. By me having to adapt to change on the spot, shows how I can think and work quickly on my feet in times of adversity. My adaptability is a career competency that I possess well because while playing sports in high school, plays changed all the time, but my performance and delivery after the change is what mattered.

Delivery is Key

Picture of me giving a speech at my high school graduation.

Speeches can be memorable, or they can be very long with poor audience reaction. When it comes to writing a speech, communication through emotions is key. I had the honor of giving a speech during my high school graduation, and my tactic was to make sure that I left an unforgettable mark on my fellow classmates.

Now, I am the type of person to wait until the last minute to do most tasks, but with being in a time crunch the pressure allows me to be more productive as my ideas flow out more easily. I waited until the day before graduation with one hour left until the deadline to turn in my speech. In doing so, this inspired me to title my speech, “Just One More Hour.”

The play of words on this title had some meaning towards me having more time to write my speech however, the overall effect was having just one more hour of high school before it was time to finally close that chapter in our lives. The way I communicated using precise and crowd engagement words throughout my speech allowed me to connect to not just my classmates but the rest of the audience on an emotional level with hopes of leaving a remarkable impact on everyone listening.
