This artifact is a presentation I composed in my Literacies of Education class. It’s a text set which is a multimedia slide that provides background information and scaffolds the lesson for students. The title for this text set is “Immigration from Latin America to the U.S.” It’s directed for an AP Spanish Language and Culture Class. I got my standards from C3WP, the TSWBAT is, students will be able to organize information to describe the complexity of the issue and develop arguments using evidence to engage with multiple perspectives, and acknowledge a new line of thinking. I used multimedia which included poems from Facebook, a news article, a quote from a book, photograph of a woman by a mural, and photographs of people protesting. This allows students to become more engaged because I’m not just giving them an article to read and answer questions on. Throughout this lesson, students are given questions with each media piece and are expected to do a quick write or do think pair share. This leads up to their CLOZE assignments which helps them work on key vocabulary words that are relevant to the assignment. Then the final assignment is a RAFT in which students have a variety of ways they can compose it. A RAFT allows me to see that they understand the material because they create work from the perspective of a key person in the material presented.
This artifact is important because it shows I know how to implement various perspectives, make my material relevant, and have students engage with the material in non-traditional ways. I made this presentation with the intent of providing students with different perspectives from immigrants in different countries of Latin America, as well as some issues they gave when they’re in the U.S. I gained insights from my Professor in the course, she told me that my topic might be considered controversial to some administrators or parents. Whereas I only saw it as informational. This relates to my education, my career aspirations, and my personal interests. I’m studying to be a teacher so this was good practice composing lessons and using resources, I also got to present it to my other classmates that are in education as well.
I aspire to teach my students about many different perspectives and teach them how to be critical thinkers so that they can make smart evidence-based decisions. It also relates to my personal interests because I’m the daughter of immigrants and I also learned a lot while making this lesson. This definitely helped with my career development because I had to compose a lesson with many things in mind for my future students. This definitely gave me a good background in text sets and multimedia so I plan on using this skill in the future. I will find ways to make parents and administrators see the importance and relevance of teaching students how to analyze multiple perspectives. I would like to continue composing lessons because as you teach you’re also learning.
Leadership
This artifact is called “Flex Hours Observations” I did this during my class Intro to Education. I had to go out to educational facilities to implement what I learned in class and reflect on the experience. I worked at two schools in the Springdale school district through the After School Program. I went to Helen Tyson Middle School and Knapp elementary school. Although it was my job I also had to think about how to make relevant observations for my class. The employees also had to abide by the “Minimum Licensing Requirements” set by DHS. I did this during the start of the coronavirus pandemic so I also had to deal with CDC guidelines on top of everything else. I needed to take note of the diverse students in order to understand their diverse needs. I had to think about the “why” of everything. For example, why do we only sit four to a table or why do they get 30 minutes of playtime? I needed to understand what the purpose was of everything we did. In this paper, I go into detail about what I saw and how I reacted to it.
This artifact is important because it helped build my Leadership career competency. The best way to learn is by doing and that’s what I did through this experience. It was a pivotal experience in my education experience, I learned a lot about patience, diverse needs in students, and classroom management. I encountered many challenges especially since I was doing it during my first education course. Had I done it now, I believe I’d have more efficient techniques, but like I said it was my first time actually having field experience. I learned a lot and it is reflected through this paper. I am very proud of myself for putting myself out there despite my experiences and the obstacles that I faced.
This paper also helped me put my experience into words. I look back at it and remember what I went through, what I know now, and what I’d do differently. It also prepared me for unforeseen circumstances that may change the whole trajectory of the school, or this case the world because of the pandemic. I read back on this before becoming a subtitle teacher and it helped me immensely. I would like to have more field experiences so that I can learn, reflect, and continue to evolve.
