Communication: The Key to Connection

A photo of me standing by our monitor, getting ready to anchor the sports block for UATV News!

Working as both a sports anchor and producer has strengthened my communication and interpersonal skills in fast-paced, team-oriented environments. Every broadcast requires clear coordination between anchors, producers, and the technical crew, and I’ve learned how vital effective communication is to keeping everything on track. Whether I’m leading pre-show discussions, adjusting to last-minute script changes, or giving direction from the control room, I focus on being clear, calm, and collaborative.

These experiences have helped me build confidence in connecting with others, adapting to different communication styles, and maintaining professionalism under pressure. I’ve also learned the importance of listening, valuing input from teammates and using feedback to improve each show. Through my time at UATV, I’ve developed the ability to lead with composure, communicate with purpose, and contribute to a strong, supportive team dynamic.

Leading with Purpose

Leadership is about setting an example that inspires others to give their best. I’ve learned that strong leaders don’t simply direct, but they listen, encourage, and adapt. When challenges arise, I stay calm and focused, making thoughtful decisions that keep progress moving forward. I value collaboration and believe that recognizing others’ efforts builds trust and motivation within any group.

To me, leadership is less about control and more about connection — fostering an environment where people feel supported, heard, and confident in their own abilities. True leadership means guiding with integrity, communicating with respect, and helping others rise alongside you.

My Statement on the Ethical Use of AI

Before my Professional ePorfolio course, I mainly used AI for quick checks or even for entertainment. Working on my portfolio showed me how much more effective it can be when used thoughtfully. I relied on AI to review drafts, identify unclear sections, and help me refine my writing while keeping my own voice intact.

Using it regularly taught me to balance the tool with my own judgment. It made my revisions more efficient and my work more polished, and it helped me become more intentional about how I express my ideas, which is an important skill for any professional setting, including broadcast journalism.

As I move forward academically and professionally, I plan to use AI to support writing, planning, and communication while maintaining ethical and responsible use. This experience has given me confidence in leveraging technology effectively and prepared me to work more efficiently in professional environments.
