Study Abroad: Stepping Outside of Comfort

Lucy in front of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona

One solo ticket to Spain became the most transformative decision of my college experience. It was the first time that I had ever traveled internationally without my family, and i’ll never forget the moment I watched my mom disappear past TSA and I felt the sudden weight of independence sink in. Arriving in Barcelona alone, I was both terrified and overjoyed, ready to navigate a new country, language, and culture entirely on my own. That summer taught me so much more than classroom lessons, it taught me self-assurance, leadership, and adaptability. I learned how to problem solve in unfamiliar situations, communicate across cultural and language barriers, and how to trust my ability to lead even when I am uncertain. After I got home, I noticed a tangible change in how I approached challenges and opportunities. Now I feel comfortable stepping into unfamiliar environments, leading group projects, and taking initiative in professional settings. Studying abroad reminded me that confidence is built through action and now I bring that same mindset into everything I encounter.

Volunteering Matters: Serving My Community

My service learning project at the Yvonne Richardson Community Center changed the way that I view serving my community. On my first day, I nervously walked in unsure of what to expect, but the second I got there I was met with smiles, laughter, and an immediate sense of belonging. Volunteering at the YRCC reminded me how powerful community service can be. Each day was filled with joy, connection, and purpose, whether I was helping with homework or joining in a game of basketball. I had volunteered for years growing up, even earning the Presidential Service Award annually, but this experience felt different. It reminded me that service has meaning wherever you are, not just the community you grew up in. Serving at the YRCC taught me that no matter where life takes me, there will always be a community worth showing up for.

Cooking: Creative Outlet

Ever since I was little, I have been fascinated by cooking. Being in the kitchen has always felt like a way to clear my mind and focus my energy. I remember standing on a stool, watching my mom prepare dinner, wishing I could one day make food as delicious as hers. Cooking has become more than just making meals, it’s a way for me to connect with others and bring people together. I find so much joy in creating something that people love and share together sitting at the same table, just like me and my family did every night while I was growing up. The kitchen is a space for me to fail without worry, test my creativity, and unplug from the world. Every meal I make is an opportunity to share love, care, and meaningful moments.
