Hi, my name is Luna and I want to help you build your portfolio.
You should change the pictures and photos in this portfolio template and make it your own. Your opening page is your about me. It is a two to three paragraph description of things about you that would interest a professional audience. You can find more information about it at Crafting Your About Me
Changing the Picture
Let’s start with changing the picture.
- Click on my picture.
- When you see a box pop up you can click “Replace” and “Upload.”
- Now add a photo from your computer. This photo will give your viewers a first impression. It is important to pick a friendly-looking professional photo.
Let’s label our picture in case someone with a screen reader wants to know about our picture. It is so easy that even a doggo like me can do it.
- Double-click the picture again and a box will pop up on the right.
- You will see a box that says, “Alternative text.”
- Click into the box and then describe the picture in detail. I wrote, “Cute golden retriever who looks like she is smiling.”
Let’s make the photo a different shape.
- Double-click the picture again and a box will pop up on the right.
- Find the section that says “Styles.”
- Play around with those buttons and you can change the photo shape. Mine is the wave.
Let’s change the size of the photo.
- Notice a box and little circles showing up.
- Hold down your mouse button over one of the circles, you can drag and make the picture bigger or smaller.
Adding Text and Changing Text
Let’s add text.
- Click the + plus symbol on the top left.
- Click on “paragraph.”
- It will create a box where you can add words.
- Add your own words
Practice by putting some words into the textbox. Try cutting and pasting some words and putting them into a textbox.
Let’s change the words.
1. Clicking on the words you created and a box will pop up.
2. Play around with the different buttons to make it bold, centered, a different color.
Anytime, you want to add something new (a textbox, a heading, a picture and much, much more), click the + plus symbol. WordPress is a block editor which means it works by building boxes and moving them around. It seems pretty weird at first, but once you think about it, it makes sense. Putting things in boxes works when you have to make the page small enough to fit on your phone or large enough to fit on a computer screen.
Adding Headings
When making a webpage, it is important to use the Heading feature and not just make words bigger or bolder to make them heading. This is because it will display differently and it will help screen readers know how to read it better.
Let’s add a heading.
- Click the + plus symbol on the top left.
- Click on “Heading.”
- A box will appear where you can add your heading.
Let’s move the heading.
- Click on your heading
- Click on the up or down triangle to move your heading.
Additional Information
Maybe you are like me and you forget how to do new things. It’s OK, it’s normal. It can be helpful to leave these instructions on the page to help you. When your portfolio is all finished, then come back and delete all these instructions. To do that, simply click on a textbox and you will see a formatting box pop up. Click on the three dots and scroll down to see “delete.” You know what to do now!! Click delete.
Here is more information on adding content to your site.
When you are ready to get fancy and change your themes, you can give it a try. Here are some instructions for that.
